About Tenerife

Tenerife is one of the seven Canary Islands, an archipielago pertaining to Spain.

BASIC INFO

It is the largest of the islands and is crowned by the volcano Teide, which is the highest point in Spain. The Teide National Park is an UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It is one of the main touristic destinations in Spain and in the world. Its unique black beaches (result of the volcano’s ashes), distinct microclimates and landscapes and kind climate makes it the ultimate destination for a trip… or for an internship placement!

It has the oldest University of the islands, La Laguna university, and this city is also an UNESCO World Heritage Site. You can wander along its streets with beautiful colonial-style houses, have some tapas in their multiple bars and mix with the student life of the island.

Tenerife has two airports, Tenerife North and Tenerife South, as well as two ports, in Santa Cruz and Los Cristianos, from where you can catch a ship and visit the rest of islands!

CULTURE AND GASTRONOMY

The Canary Islands are the home of the typical papas con mojo, a dish composed of potatoes and a special Canarian spicy sauce. There are other dishes really appreciated by the locals, such as the queso asado (smoked cheese) or escaldón (obtained with gofio, a typical kind of toasted flour).

In terms of culture, Tenerife shows one of the most spectacular folkloric agenda of the islands. It holds one of the world-top three most visited carnivals, the Santa Cruz Carnival, where people from all over the world dress up in costumes and dance and sing in the streets for days. Other typical festivities are the Romerías, where people dress up with typical clothes from their village and recreates a procession with saints, with typical local dances. In La Orotava, there is a tradition of creating beautiful and colorful flower carpets in the streets in June, as well as the world’s largest sand carpet, with sand taken from the Mount Teide.
